The Establishment development of Faculty of Engineering

In 1941 Faculty of Engineering, Cairo University established a branch in Alexandria.

In 1942 a decree was issued Law No. 32 of 1942 to establish Alexandria University.

In 1942, the beginning of the academic year for preparatory and first year students (architecture, civil, mechanics, and electric).

In 1946, the establishment of Sanitary Engineering and municipalities Department.

In 1953, the establishment of Chemical Engineering.

In 1960, the establishment of Mechanical Power Engineering Department and Textile Engineering Department.

In 1961, the establishment of Marine Engineering Department.

In 1963, the establishment of Production Engineering Department.

In 1964, the establishment of Nuclear Engineering Department.

In 1974, the establishment of Computer and Systems Engineering Department.

In 2006, the establishment of specialized scientific programs...

-Gas and petrochemicals engineering program.

-Electromechanical engineering program.

-Computer and Telecommunications Engineering program.  

-Architecture and construction Engineering program. 

Architecture Department

Architecture Department from the early department, which found at the faculty since its establishment in 1942, and the department continues in the teaching performance for more than sixty years as the first graduation class graduated in 1946-1947. From the beginning, there were varied systems of the study at the department when it was three years of specialized study and then five years, then the current system starting from 1967-1968, which is four specialized years after preparatory year.

Mission

Prepare outstanding architects in the distinct vision of architecture and planning, that through teaching and scientific research and community service and development environment.

Objectives

Department works to upgrade the profession of architecture by connecting the theoretical and scientific study with community and the surrounding environment and what follow that from elevating the level of architecture, not only at the local level but also at national and regional levels in the Arab world.

Department aims to graduate architects at a high level of efficiency and competitiveness in the labor market and also at efficient level of collect contemporary science and the ability to solve problem and decision-making and community development through participation in put scientific and practical solutions to current problems.

Study’s Fields

Specialization begins in the third year; the department is divided into the following branches:

Public buildings branch - Housing branch - Urban Design branch.

Scientific Degrees

-The department awards the bachelor's degree in the disciplines of public buildings, housing and urban design. This is in addition to the higher grades in the following:

-Diploma in Professional Studies in Environmental Design – Location design - multimedia applications in architecture.

-Postgraduate Diploma in Architectural Design - Urban Design.

-Master of Architecture.

-Master of Science in Architecture.

-PhD in Architecture.

Laboratories and equipment

The department includes the two main halls equipped with audio and video equipments, in addition to three other halls for lectures. , A museum and a specialized library and computer lab, as well as distance learning lab and geographic information systems (under processing).

 Structural Engineering Department

The study begins at Structural Engineering Department in 1942 and the department one from scientific departments of Civil Engineering Department, the department has the responsibility of teaching courses in the field of Structural Engineering.

Mission

Provide an outstanding education and research level in the area of structural engineering and to contribute in having “" civilian "" engineer distinguished in this field as well as service environment and the surrounding community.

Objectives

Contribute to the preparation of graduates from civil engineers to compete with a good level in the labor market and meet the requirements of the community to contribute in the design and implementation of construction.

Study ‘fields

Concrete structures and  bridges, metal bridges and structures, properties and testing of materials, soil mechanics and foundation engineering, facilities analysis, and construction management.

Scientific Degrees

-Diploma in Structural Engineering in  branches  of (Materials and Quality Control - Soil Mechanics and Foundations - design of reinforced concrete structures - Design of Steel Structures - Analysis and design of facilities).

-Diploma in Construction Management.

-Master of Science in Structural Engineering.

-Master of Structural Engineering in various disciplines.

-PhD in Structural Engineering.

Lab of test properties of materials – Lab of soil and foundations Research – soil lab - reinforced concrete lab and facilities analysis lab.

Transportation Engineering Department

Transportation Engineering Department  one from  four  department s of Civil Engineering and it  teaching courses  in the field planning and design of transportation facilities railway, ports, roads and beaches ,in addition to Surveying  , Geodesy , basic engineering materials, such as drawing and geology engineering and humans subjects such as law and economics.

Mission

Contribute to the preparation of a civil engineer  have a full knowledge about  all newest  information and modern methods of design and implementation in the disciplines which  the department teaching it , with providing service to the community in the field of ocean transport , offshore facilities and the protection of beaches.

Objectives

The preparation of talented engineers in the field who meets the requirements of the community from various studies.

Study ‘fields

Courses, which the department oversees on teaching it to the undergraduate students, were given basic principles about all areas of civil engineering in general and the areas of public works and transport in particular. These courses are: Drawing Civil - Geology Engineering - Legislation and Economics Engineering - Surveying - Transportation Planning and Traffic Engineering - roads, airports engineering - Railway Engineering - engineering of ports and marine facilities and beaches.

Scientific Degrees

In Postgraduate Studies field, the department takes the responsibility of awarding engineer scientific degrees in the scientific and specialized fields which above mentioned - “Diploma of Postgraduate Studies - Master - PhD ".

Laboratories and equipment

Department oversees on two labs: Surveying lab and highway lab.

-The surveying lab contains various instruments to cover the needs of students in the undergraduate and postgraduate stages. It also helps research studies and community services.

-  The highway lab covers the needs of different instruments to carry out tests of highway paving materials, asphaltic mixtures components and design.

Irrigation and Hydraulics Department

Irrigation and Hydraulics Department is one of the important departments that contribute to the formation of the civil engineering program at the undergraduate and postgraduate level.

Mission

Prepare  a distinguished graduate specialize  in Irrigation and Hydraulics, as well as  doing an outstanding research in the fields of water science ,with  provide an effective service to the community in these areas.

Objectives

The most important objectives of the department: Educate and teach the basic and applied engineering sciences to solve the problems of civil engineering related to water science. Training the student on required experience in design engineering through the development of communication skills and the emphasis on the teamwork spirit and the capacity to make the decision. Provides the necessary environment for the development of student‘s sense towards the importance of learning and search about information and develop his/her scientific ability with a focus on the use of computers and multimedia in the field of Irrigation and Hydraulics. Emphasis on the ethics of the profession and its important role in community development and environmental conservation.

The department in cooperation and coordination with Ministry of Irrigation and Water Resources to choose national projects which  planned and designed  by undergraduate students so that it is closely tied to the giant strategic projects adopted by the state.

Hydraulics - Irrigation and Drainage Engineering - Hydrology - Irrigation system design – Environment conservation.

Scientific Degrees

Bachelor of Civil Engineering - Postgraduate Diploma in the fields of Irrigation, drainage, irrigation facilities, water resources Engineering and Environmental Engineering – Master and doctoral degrees in the disciplines  which mentioned above.

Laboratories and equipment

The Irrigation Engineering and Hydraulics Department has two laboratories 
for performing scientific experiments for the pre-graduate students and the postgraduate studies students, as well as summer training for students. The laboratory doing experiments and tests which conducted to serve the community in the fields of water engineering sciences.

Sanitary Engineering Department

Is one from the four departments of civil engineering

Mission

Sanitary Engineering Department is related with the study of drinking water and water usage in all purposes of daily life and industrial aspects as well as all relevant articles and work related to the collection of sewage, industrial and wastewater treatment in all its forms and the re-usage of treated water, and the collection and filtering of solid waste of all kinds.

Objectives

Contribute to the preparation of graduates from civil engineers in the field of maintaining good human health with regard to drinking water, sewage treatment and environmental conservation.

Study’s fields

The processing of surface water , wells and salt water - sewage treatment and industrial waste - solid waste management - Water Supply Engineering - maintain water (fresh and salt) from  pollution - hazardous waste and how to get rid  of them  in safely way - maintain sources of groundwater pollution.

Scientific Degrees

The department awards to allow engineers to obtain a high Diploma Degree, a Master of Science Degree and Doctor of Philosophy degree in Sanitary Engineering.

Laboratories and equipment

Sanitary Engineering Department  includes some laboratory equipment, which enables  researcher to identify key components for both drinking water and wastewater.

Areas of work

Planning and design of water systems and overseeing the implementation - planning, designing and supervising the implementation of sewage system-  work in the implementation and design of potable water and wastewater -design of large and medium-supply facilities - Business classification and determine the requirements of collection, treatment and reuse of industrial wastewater.

Mechanical Engineering Department

Mission

Educate, train and graduate mechanical engineers who are able to contribute effectively to the economic development and in the upholding and development of Egyptian society nowdays, with emphasis on the leading role of the department towards the development of mechanical engineering science through advanced scientific research programs which leading to a master's degree and doctoral degree in the field of mechanical engineering. Department is also involved in continuing education programs to raise the level of graduates.

Objectives

Preparation of graduates  have a full knowledge  about basic and applied engineering sciences, to solve the problems of mechanical engineering, and have also  the necessary expertise in design engineering through the development of communication skills and the emphasis on  the spirit of teamwork  and the ability to take decision . As well as providing the necessary environment for the development of  sense of the importance of learning  for engineer ,as well as search for information and  develop knowledge  and practical abilities constantly with focus on the use of computers and multimedia in the field of mechanical engineering. The provision of required basic skills from mathematical, laboratory and manufacturing skills for the performance, implementation and evaluation of different mechanical engineering. Emphasis on the ethics of the profession and its important role towards community development and environmental conservation. Let the graduate have a look on what developments and scientific research have reached in the field of mechanical engineering.

Combustion Engineering: Theory of Combustion - internal combustion engines - gas turbines - gas dynamics - Automotive Engineering.

Applied Mechanics: Mechanics of Materials - Mechanics of Machines - Mechanical Design - Mechanical vibrations - Automatic Control - preventive maintenance.

In addition to the course from other departments such as: Mathematics - Electric Machines and Industrial Electronic - Manufacturing Engineering - Humanities sciences includes: Economy Engineering - Psychology - Marketing - industrial legislation - projects planning.

Scientific Degrees

Department awards  the bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering and a diploma in mechanical engineering in the disciplines: Fluid Engineering, thermal power plants, refrigeration and air-conditioning, Combustion Engineering, Applied Mechanics and Automatic Control. Department also awards the Master's Degree in Mechanical Science and PhD of Philosophy in Mechanical Engineering.

 Production Engineering Department

Production Engineering Department began as a branch of mechanical engineering in 1957 and became a separate department for the first time in Egyptian universities in 1963.

Mission

Provision of engineering  research to serve the community with high quality and which covers the areas of production engineering for design, planning, development, operation ,maintenance and management of productivity , service and governmental organizations.

Objectives

Preparation for production engineers equipped with basic engineering science, in addition to communication skills and the ability of management and planning, through teaching, as well as scientific research and contributes effectively to the development of engineering education systems, to provide continuing education for community service.

Study‘s fields

Mechanical manufacturing techniques, materials and measurements techniques , quality and planning control ,supervision, and management, production and operations management, Operations Research and Industrial Engineering.

Scientific Degrees

Bachelor of Production Engineering - Diploma in (the fields of Production Engineering) - Master of Engineering in (the fields of Production Engineering) - Master of Science in (the fields of production engineering) – PhD of Philosophy.

Laboratories and equipment

 Department Laboratory Facilities are used for both teaching and research purposes.

The main facilities are, a Materials technology laboratory, a Metal forming laboratory, a Diagnostic engineering laboratory, CNC laboratory, a Robotics and CIM laboratory, a Machining research laboratory, a Laboratories of metrology and quality control and Non-destructive testing laboratory.

In addition, there are metal cutting, welding, forming, and foundry workshops.

Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering Department

Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering Department was established in 1961 and graduated its first batch in 1964 .in the beginning, the department was a branch of Mechanical Engineering Department, and it concerns one from distinct department in Egypt and the Middle East. The department has already awarded the approval of bachelor's degree in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering from the British Council for admitted students from 1996 to 2001.

Mission

Seeking for excellence in the field of education and scientific research through the preparation of engineers in the fields of Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering and Offshore Engineering, who are able to work successfully in the maritime field and using scientific bases, through teaching materials keep pace with global progress in this field and provides Advanced research program.

Objectives

Provide advanced level of education to graduate qualified engineers to work in the maritime field, and advancement of education level of Naval Architecture, and Marine Engineering and, so it can be keep up with corresponding departments in the international universities in terms of qualified graduates.

The study's field in the department includes many courses that serve different disciplines, which lead the student to be knowledgeable about the design and operational details of ships and offshore facilities, and marine power plants.

-Bachelor of Science in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering.

Textile Engineering Department

The Textile Engineering Department is considered the first department in the Middle East in that field; which serves one of the most important industries in Egypt and the Arabian area. The department was founded in 1960 and the first graduation was in 1964. The establishment of this department had a vital influence on renovating the Textile industries in Egypt.

Mission

Graduation of engineers working in all the textile factories in both public and private sectors and in leadership positions.

Objectives

Graduating well-educated engineers who are capable to compete with the international market with the international economically daily changes, improving the knowledge of the graduate through post graduates studies. Applying the scientific research & studies in the industry & production field. Coping with the new scientific & industrial development in the textile engineering & its application in the different engineering & medical fields.

There are many engineering disciplines in the field of textile, including: Mechanics of Textile Machinery – organization and management of  Textile factories - Textile Industry - Textile quality control - Design and theory of textile Machinery - fiber  technology - Spinning technology - Composite Materials Engineering and Nanotechnology - Quality Management in the spinning and textiles.

Scientific Degree

The Textile Engineering Department postgraduate studies
to grant the Diploma Degree (spinning – weaving – knitting and garment – mill organization diploma) as well as Master and Doctorate Degree in the different fields of Textile engineering.

Spinning lab,  weaving lab, Knitting lab, Fiber, yarn, & fabric testing lab, Fiber, yarn, & fabric testing lab, and Composite material lab.

Areas of work

Spinning, textile and garment factories in public, private, and investment sector at the level of the governorates of the Republic.

 Electrical Engineering Department

This department is considered one of the famous departments in the faculty, as a lot of students prefer join to it, it also has a lot of graduates, and a higher statistics in awarding different degrees such as, Diploma, Master and Doctorate degree.

Mission:

The department provides an outstanding education in electrical engineering with rich diversity of skills to contribute to the community property through professional services and research. The department also prepares graduates able to engage in life-long learning and capable of carrying out engineering practice with competence.

Objectives

Preparing a batch of engineers have the ability to serve the community, achieve the requirements of industry, and fulfill the demands of the national and international labor market.

Study's Fields

First year, the student studies the electrical engineering in general, to have a full background about it, to able to choose his/her willingly branch, that is will be in the second year, as  he/she  can specialize in one from these two branches : Electrical power machines and automatic control branch or communication and electronic engineering branch.

The student can get Bachelor of electrical engineering by the end of the  fourth years  in one of two branches (Electrical power machines and automatic control branch or communication and electronic engineering branch), graduates can also get Master or PHD degree in the following fields:

Communication engineering.

Laboratories and equipment

The Electrical Engineering Department has 17 labs, their function is to provide practical service and experimental work to the undergraduate and post graduate courses, student summer training as well.

Also these labs are employed to carry out all the testing and calibrations needed by the engineering center of the faculty.

Electrical power plants, Communications system, Electric power distribution networks, Electronics Engineering, Radio and TV.

Computer and Systems Engineering Department

T he Department of Computer Science And Automatic Control, Faculty of Engineering, Alexandria University was opened in the year 1969. At this time, it was considered the 1st of its nature in the Middle East., the department is teaching the subjects which related to computer science engineering such as, Programming, Data Structures (data base), Translation, Operating systems (windows), Computer fundamentals, control systems, smart systems…etc. The department’s name was changed from Computer Science and Automatic Control to Computer and Systems Engineering Department

In the beginning of 2003-2004.

Mission:

        Increase the number of specialist engineer in all country sides in the fields of computer and systems, through theoretical courses and scientific training, which had provided by this department, in addition scientific research, continued education activities, community service, and environment development, that’s through The Scientific Computation Centre which is supervised by the department.

Objectives

 Graduate specialist engineers with a high level of training and scientific and technical efficiency to be able to keep pace with Scientific and technological development in the labor market.

Study's Fields

Languages and engineering of software, Computer operating systems, Data base, Computer and networks fundamentals, and control systems, and smart systems.

Scientific Degrees

The department gives the degree of bachelor, master and Ph.D. in Computer Engineering.

Laboratories and equipment

Digital circuits’ lab, databases lab, operating systems lab, networks lab, applications lab, digital control lab, the department also has Scientific Computation Centre ,  which gives support to students along with various public training courses.

Areas of work

Analysis, design, implementation and management of software systems, database systems computer network systems, automatic control systems, and smart systems.

Nuclear Engineering and Radiation Department

Nuclear Engineering Department was created in 1963 and graduated its first batch in the year 66/67. In 2004, the department was renamed to Nuclear and Radiation Engineering Department where the curriculum have  been modified  to keep pace with scientific progress in the use of radioisotopes and it's industrial applications and environmental dangers associated with this development.

Mission:

Formation engineering staff to contribute to technological development in the field of nuclear and radiation engineering and the peaceful use of nuclear energy.

Objectives:

Graduate engineers able to work in the field of nuclear and radiation engineering, nuclear reactors and radioactive environment.

Study’s Fields

The areas of nuclear engineering are concentrated in the physical and thermal design of the reactors, test the properties of materials, reactor safety and automatic control.

In the post-graduate, the department gives the diploma degree  in nuclear plants and also in the radiation and the environment after four seasons seminars spread over two years.

Scientific degrees

After studying four years , the department gives the bachelor's degree in nuclear and radiation engineering .courses cover a great deal in the field of Electrical Engineering, Mechanical in general and nuclear engineering and radiation in particular .Also the department  gives the master's degree and doctorate in nuclear engineering and radiation where the student attend ,within one year, introductory six decisions spread over two semesters to be selected to serve the subject matter requirement for the partial master's and doctoral degrees.

Laboratories and equipment

The department has two laboratories, one for thermodynamics and the second for radiation measurements. The department seeks to build a research reactor and also build simulator to train students how to operate the reactors and the analysis of incidents.

Chemical Engineering Department

The study of chemistry was limited to the faculties of science at Egyptian universities, which had its branches contain traditional knowledge of chemistry. In 1942 was established for the first time in Egypt, Department of Chemical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering University of Fuad I (now Cairo), and then it was followed directly in 1944 the establishment of the Institute of Industrial Chemistry, University of Farouk I (Alexandria now), who turned out in 1954 to the Department of Chemical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering.

Mission

Preparation of a chemical engineer at a high level able to understand and recognize the principles of engineering for chemical and petrochemical industries for the industrial community service local, regional and international levels.

Objectives

Department aims to prepare the graduate to has the ability to understand the basics of chemical engineering and analysis of existing problems in chemical processes and propose solutions and study them then access to the best solutions.

Study’s Fields

The student, studying the principles and fundamentals of chemistry and the Basic engineering materials, which the chemical industry needs, and then begins to integrate what has been studied of the applications on the chemical industry, petrochemicals and various industries existing in the region such as oil refineries and processes natural gas, fertilizers, oils, cement, paper, chemicals, water treatment and desalination.

Scientific Degrees

The department gives the degrees of Diploma and master's and doctoral degrees in many different areas (such as environmental engineering - technology polymers - materials made up - desalination and water treatment - Membrane separation technology - refining of petroleum and natural gas Engineering - fertilizer industry).

Laboratories and equipment

The department has four laboratories for undergraduate students and a laboratory for the band prep in addition to a corrosion , electrochemistry laboratory  and  laboratory of metals and laboratory of Physical chemistry and laboratory for shared natural operations and three labs for researches and Bachelor projects, these labs are equipped with certain devices such as thermal analysis - spectrometer - measurements of electrochemical .Also there is also a laboratory for the projects of environmental engineering students by many of the organs of student projects which were funded from different directions.

Areas of work

Companies of oil refining, petrochemical and natural gas, building materials and various chemical industries such as paper, leather, oils, detergents and chemicals, in addition to working in the field of different kinds of pollution control, environmental protection and water desalination plants.

 The Mathematics and Engineering Physics Department

Is one of the most important departments in the faculty, although it offers its services to other departments and there are no graduates from it, the department entrusted with teaching basic materials altogether.

Mission

The department provides educational services to all departments of the faculty and the teaching of basic sciences, such as Mathematics, Statistics, Mechanics, Physics, and Engineering Drawing and Engineering Projection to students of preparatory year, to prepare them to enter all the specialized departments as well as teaching the same basic sciences in the various engineering departments.

Objectives

Provide educational services in the basic sciences for students of the faculty.

Study’s Field

Engineering mathematics, engineering physics, engineering mechanics, engineering drawing, and Geometrical Projection for all levels.

Scientific Degrees

The department grants master and doctoral degrees in Mathematics and Physical Engineering.

Laboratories and equipment

The department is equipped with 2 types of laboratories: Physics lab and computer lab, which interfere in the teaching of engineering drawing (GPU).
